At first glance, a visitor is struck by the beauty and size of the meadows and the many flowering trees, shrubs and wildflowers that surround the Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center. A looping trail through one of the fields allows a closer look at the various plant, bird and mammal species that reside in the meadow habitat. Among the many habitats at the Kay Center is a stately hardwood forest with trails that wind down through a breathtaking Eastern Hemlock forest to the edge of the Black River. Visitors can also follow the river to historic Cooper Mill; however, a permit must be obtained at the Kay Center or from the Park Police to walk the environmentally sensitive trails leading to the Black River Gorge. Dedicated in 1994 as the Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center, the 223-acre “Hidden River Farm” property was given by the Kay family to be used as an environmental center where “each day would bring a new wonder and challenge to learn.” To enhance visitors knowledge of the natural world around them, self-guiding trail booklets and program guides are available at the Kay Center.
