Although not officially considered a conservation area, Metro Parks manages two newly acquired tracts totaling 32 acres along the Long Lake Channel, which is part of the Portage Lakes ecosystem. Located across the street from the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trailhead on Manchester Road, several nest boxes were established here for purple martins, a species that establishes colonies near water. This area includes an excellent example of what the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency considers a Category 3 wetland the “best” and rarest type of wetland in Ohio. Across the water is an impressive bronze statue of a Native American carrying his canoe. The statue commemorates the southern terminus of the path once used by Native Americans to portage canoes between the Tuscarawas and Cuyahoga rivers.
