Is the oldest continuously operating museum in Texas. The collections were founded in 1856 when Baylor University was located at Independence, Texas. At that time, the board of trustees specifically requested “cabinets to house the minerals, shells, and petrifactions.” The university moved to Waco in 1886, and in 1893 the museum was formally established under the name Baylor University Museum. Orlando Clark Charlton, a professor of natural science, was appointed its first curator.
