Middlebury runs its own ski area, which started in 1921 when the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association formed with the Middlebury Outing Club as a charter member of the organization. Its purpose was the promotion of interest in intercollegiate ski running and the adoption of uniform rules at ski meets. (The competition seemed more like a cold weather Boy Scout Jamboree.)
