The Narragansett Bay Research Reserve is located in the heart of Narragansett Bay on four islands: Prudence, Patience, Hope and Dyer; it protects and manages approximately 4,400 acres of land and water. Habitats within the Reserve include salt marsh, eelgrass beds, rocky intertidal zone, pine barren, deciduous forest and coastal meadow. The Narragansett Bay Research Reserve is based on Prudence Island. Headquarters is located in the Lab and Learning Center on the south end of Prudence. The Center features an exhibit room highlighting local flora and fauna with a kids’ area and an identification station. The island’s only public restrooms are also located here. During the summer months on Prudence Island the Reserve’s “Estuary Ed Shed” is open for visitors. It is located on the south end of the island at the T-Wharf. The Ed Shed is staffed by our seasonal naturalists and has several aquariums as well as a touch tank filled with local critters from the Bay.
