The “natural bridge” is a marble arch created centuries ago by melting glaciers. The bridge spans a rushing brook that tumbles through a steep gorge. A quarry that produced coarse-grained white marble from the early 1800s and a privately owned tourist attraction from 1950 to 1983, the property became a state park in 1985. Many buildings in the North Adams area were constructed in part by marble quarried here. In the summer months, knowledgeable park interpreters are on hand to explain the natural forces that created the bridge and its more recent human-related history.
