The earliest maps refer to this stream as Fish Creek. Considering the area’s current popularity with fishermen, its former name was appropriate! After the 1800s, the creek was renamed to honor Bernard Pratte, who operated a fur post near the mouth of the creek. A spelling error changed the name forever to Platte Creek One of the earliest settlements in the region began at the Platte Creek and Missouri River junction. In the early 1860s, troops from Fort Randall were stationed here and the area became a river crossing point for the government.
