Not only does the southern California/Baja California region sustain one of the highest levels of biodiversity in North America, it is also one of the most sensitive and challenged areas of the continent, with the highest number of threatened or endangered species. The San Diego/Tijuana region has a combined population of over 4 million, with projected growth of 49% by 2015. The current director, Dr. Michael Hager, arrived in 1991 and led the Museum through an intensive self-evaluation and strategic planning process to provide a roadmap for growth in this rapidly changing environment.
