This 26,609 acre refuge is a mixture of managed seasonal and permanent wetlands, riparian habitat associated with 3 major watercourses, and native grasslands/alkali sinks/vernal pools. The refuge is primarily managed to provide habitats for migratory and wintering birds. The largest concentration of mallards, pintails and green-winged teal in the San Joaquin Valley are found here. One of only 22 herds of the indigenous tule elk is located here as are a variety of endangered, threatened and sensitive species. Major public use occurs, including interpretive wildlife observation programs and waterfowl and pheasant hunting. Just a reminder – No horseback riding on the refuge.
