At over 16,000 acres, South Mountain Park/Preserve often is referred to as the largest municipal park in the country. It boasts 58 miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking for all ability levels skills.
Pima Canyon – first-time visitors sometimes have trouble finding this trailhead, but its large parking area often is packed, especially on weekend mornings. You’ll have access to the several trails – including the Desert Classic, National, Mormon Loop and the Pima loops – from this area.
Where: From Interstate 10 in east Phoenix take Exit 155 to Baseline Road. Go west about half a mile to 48th Street, then turn south and go 0.6 mile to a small traffic circle. Follow the bend, taking the second right and meandering east, then south, past a golf course for 0.6 mile to Guadalupe Road. Continue 0.2 mile and turn right. About 100 yards along, turn west on Pima Canyon Road and enter the park. The trailhead is 0.6 mile from the entry gate.
