The West Virginia Botanic Garden is an 82-acre site located at 1061 Tyrone Road, Morgantown, 1.8 miles from Rt. 7 and 2.4 miles from Rt 857. The GPS position is 39.630912,-79.869699 decimal degrees. The garden features several small designed gardens and hiking trails looping through mixed hardwood and softwood forests, which have not been commercially logged and which demonstrate the structural features of “Old Growth” forests. Thickets of rhododendron hug the banks of Tibbs Run. A boardwalk provides access to a wetlands area. This is the site of the former reservoir that supplied water to the City of Morgantown, seven miles away, and there is an accessible loop trail around the reservoir basin, which still includes some features from the former reservoir system. The garden is open dawn to dusk daily, with the lower parking lot open on Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. There is no admission charge. Check the web site at www.wvbg.org for the schedule of walks, workshops, and other special events.
